Prairie Trust Invasive Species Playing Cards!

Prairie Trust has produced decks of playing cards profiling 13 plant invaders of important rangelands and riparian habitats on the Canadian prairies. The invasive plants profiled in these cards are either new threats to Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Alberta, or are species that are becoming a greater problem and are not easily identified by agricutural producers and other land managers as established invaders.

Each species has four playing cards dedicated to its identification, threats to the economy and environment, pathways of invasion and contact information for provincial organizations working on invasive plants. Cards are full colour and, in addition to technical text, have photos of seedling, mature vegetative, flowering and seed stages.

The playing cards were produced with the support of many partners and with funding from the Greencover Canada Program and the Frenchman - Wood River Weed Management Area.

Playing cards are available to educators, landowners and land managers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba by emailing:

“One of the major threats to native biological diversity is now acknowledged by
scientists and governments to be biological invasions caused by alien invasive
species. The impacts of alien invasive species are immense, insidious, and
usually irreversible. They may be as damaging to native species and ecosystems on a global scale as the loss and degradation of habitats.”
